Content = newspapers articles, data charts, web pages, database data, music, radio, magazines, recipes, blogs, RSS feeds -basically anything that can be written, typed, stored digitally or entered into a computer. Unstructured and opaque content is created for display or print. It is a series of words that cannot be linked because there is no way to identify those words independent of their context. Word processing systems, content management systems, accounting systems, shipping systems, web sites, databases and other content sources are in disconnected digital worlds. The only way to collaborate or share content in many cases is to share common applications, and even then it may allow for single files at a time.The user’s environment is separated by read and write applications:
- Read = PDF, Browser, iTunes, Windows Media Player
- Write = Email, Word, Special purpose applications: Quicken, Turbo Tax
Without the applications, the files are generally of little value.
